Section 03Equipment
What you need on the shelf — and why. This section turns NASA standards, NASA technical briefs, Human Research Program evidence reports, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidance and the published literature into practical equipment guides for clinicians. Every item is tied back to the condition it screens for or treats, with links to the matching Clinical article. Acronyms are spelled out on first use and collected in the glossary.
A Pre-Flight & Post-Flight Clinic
Designing and outfitting a dedicated clinic for pre-flight medical evaluation and certification and post-flight return evaluation of career astronauts and commercial spaceflight participants.
B Mission Medical Kits
Equipment, drugs and supplies carried on board, and how they change from suborbital hops to Mars-class missions.
- Tiers. Clinic items are grouped as essential, recommended or advanced. These tiers are SMF editorial proposals mapped to the cited test schedules, not an official NASA or FAA classification.
- Categories, not brands. Product names appear only where they are part of a cited source (for example, a drug list published by NASA).
- Planning notes on space and infrastructure are practical estimates, flagged “pending verification”. Confirm them with equipment vendors, a qualified medical physicist (for X-ray rooms) and local building and licensing rules.
- Mission kits describe what has been published; actual flight kits are set by each program's flight surgeons and change over time.
